Chile Day 5 - 17 December 2015, Puerto Natales

Our guide for this part of our trip was Rodrigo Silva, a great guide from Albatross Birding.  Rodrigo told us that he guided Noah Strycker, who was doing a World Big Year in 2015 and was at nearly 6,000 for the year.

Today we had an early start for our long drive north from Porvenir to Puerto Natales, first  getting a ferry across the Megellanic Straits at Punta Delgada, which was a much shorter crossing that on the way over to Tierra del Fuego.

We then drove east stopping at Buque Quemado for ducks and Grebes before driving with the coast to the south and then to the north. We saw the fantastic Band-tailed Earthcreeper, which used to be thought to be an Argentinian endemic, until discovered in a small area of similar habitat in Chile, right next to the border.

We then drove through Puerto Natales, where we stopped for dinner, before driving into the night but still late evening to get to Torres del Paine National Park. The last section of the drive was truly stunning, with a long mountain range covered in snow and fjords in front.

Chile Day 4 - 16 December 2015, Tierra del Fuego

Today we were being guided again my Rodrigo Silva from Albatross Birding Tours who is a great guide with perfect English.

This morning we had a lie-in, meeting for breakfast at 7 am. We then drove south to a King Penguin reserve.  King Penguin are huge at almost 1 metre and it was unbelievable to see 130 birds at this 10 year old colony.  I've seen two species of penguin before but these were something else. It was an awesome experience to see such massive and beautiful penguins and in such a large group.

We carried on birding our way back to Porvenir, seeing some new birds on the steppe on the way back.  One stop had an official car park and was full of litter.  So we found a big sack and filled it with all the plastic and cans we could find.  That was a good deed done, if only a small one.

Back in Porvenir we bumped into Fernando Diaz, our guide for the last section of our trip, who was with a Canadian couple who Rodrigo had guided before us.  It’s always nice to meet a guide beforehand.

Chile Day 3 - 15 December 2015, Tierra del Fuego

Having not had enough sleep for 3 nights, I was feeling a bit tired this morning when I was woken up at 6.00 am.  We did some sea watching for an hour in Punto Arenas before boarding our ferry to Tierra  del Fuego, from which we looked for sea birds for the two hour crossing.  We saw lots of Black-Browed Albatrosses and one Magellanic Penguin. Although it was fantastic to see an albatross, I was hoping for a different albatross as I had seen Black-browned Albatross already in the UK.

After the ferry, we birded in the barren Tierra  del Fuego, which means island of fire.  We visited a lagoon north of the only town Porvenir, called Laguna Verde.  Here we eventually got fantastic views of our target wader, the Magellanic Plover. This bird is vulnerable with little known about.  A recent ringing (banding) programme has started which is being funded by my friends at Waderquest, Rick and Elis Simpson.  It felt awesome to see a rare bird that they were helping.
